Sunday 27th November saw the South West Regional Cyclo-cross Championships, held at Newnham park in Plymouth and hosted by Dartmoor Velo cycling club. Saturday saw a hardy bunch of volunteers led by organizer Chris Mabey, brave the continuous rain to set out and clear the course, making the most of Newnham’s natural landscape of hills woodland grassland and boggy bits! Today the rain had thankfully stopped, the winds stilled and although still quite wet underfoot it was a perfect day for a race.

Riders came from all areas of the South West, from Somerset down to Southern Cornwall to battle it out for the Regional Championship titles.

The racing kicked off with the U8s who compete on a shortened course but still with hills to negotiate and some technical ups and downs needing dismount and remount skills. This race is a fun introduction to cyclocross and even featured a rider on a balance bike! The U10 and U12s ride for longer on a similar course and things start getting more competitive. Great to see lots of our riders out taking part, well done; Indie Skinner (2nd U8F) Rosie Eastmond (3rd U8 female) Aria Roberts, Harriet Day, Freddie Uglow, Emily Eastmond (3rd U10G) Bryony Medland, Mylor Mackenzie-Vines, Gabe Parker, and Zoe Singleton. And in the U12s, Alex Pearcy, Euan James, Samuel Medland, Adam Singleton, and Toby Uglow. Hope you’re feeling better soon Mabel and thanks for your help with the chequered flag!

Congratulations Charlie Day, and Bryony Medland SWCX Champions in the U10 category!

Next we moved on to the youth race U16/U14. These riders race the full course including longer climbs and some more tricky turns through the woods. Dartmoor Velo had Freddie Day, Orla White, Aoife Scawn, Miri Crossey, James Crossey, Lara Dix and in her first race Starla. Hodge. Racing for 30 minutes, and the course getting muddier it looked gruelling but all of them rose to the challenge.

Congratulations all and especially Orla U14F and Lara U16F SW Cyclocross Champions with Aoife on the podium as 2nd U14F

…and finally the junior/senior/vets/womens race with a combined field of 97, looked very impressive as they stormed around the course. This was a tough race lasting an hour for the winning rider, so considerably more for some! The ground was getting ever muddier and slippier with a few having to pull out due to technicals. In this race we had Ewan Dix and Ollie Murphy(junior) and Leo White and Leon Dawes in the senior race. They all looked strong with Ewan taking the junior title and Ollie in 3rd and Leo taking 3rd in his first season as a senior and Leon in 8th.

A very big thank you to all those parents family and friends who helped out the club this weekend, registering, marshalling, lap counting, course clearing and setting, and to Noah and James Breslin for being our photographers! Thank you to our coaches who give their time every week giving our youngsters the skills they need to enjoy racing and thank you to Chris Mabey who took the lead and the considerable work of putting on an event like this.
